Consequences of Flat Feet as Children Grow

As children become more active and their bodies develop, having flat feet can lead to problems if not properly addressed. Here are some of the potential consequences of flat feet as kids get older.

Pain and Discomfort

Uncontrolled flat feet force the foot and lower legs to work harder with every step. Over time, this extra stress and strain can lead to pain in the feet, shins, knees, hips and lower back. The pain may start out minor but could worsen as kids become more physically active in sports and other activities.

Gait Problems

Flat feet cause the arches to collapse inward with each step. This abnormal foot motion while walking or running is called overpronation. Severe overpronation can result in problems like toe walking, leg/knee bowing and abnormal tilt of the pelvis. It disrupts a child’s natural gait pattern which isn’t healthy long term.

Injuries

Children with flat feet have a higher risk of ankle sprains since the supporting arches are weakened. Stress fractures in the legs and feet are also more common. Overpronation strains knee and hip joints which could potentially lead to injuries like tendinitis. Untreated flat feet jeopardize a child’s ability to stay active pain-free.

Growth Issues

In rare cases where flat feet are very severe, it may impact normal bone and muscle development in the legs and feet. Issues such as bowed legs can develop and affect how the child’s body grows as they age. Early intervention can help minimize negative impacts on growth.

Remember that every child is different, and what works for one may not work for another. Consulting with a healthcare professional is crucial for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to the child’s specific needs.
